PG animal shelter temporarily refusing owner-surrendered dogs

Pet adoption fees, including spay and neuter services, will be waived during the same time.

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. — Starting April 10, the Prince George’s County Animals Services Facility and Adoption Center (ASFAC) will temporarily refuse owner-surrendered dogs until Tuesday, April 30. This comes as the shelter deals with space constraints and continues undergoing deep cleaning protocols for diseases.

While the suspension is in place, the shelter will be waiving pet adoption fees, including spay and neuter services, to help get more pets out of the facility and free up space for more animals.

This suspension will not impact the facilities’ work with stray pets, animals other than dogs, or owner-surrender euthanasia requests. Owners will be provided with alternative options through rescue partners.

“Our facility continues to experience the same challenges as other shelters nationwide with diseases and the number of animals that come into our facility,” said Animal Services Director David Fisher. “When faced with these challenges, our team shifts its operations to efficiently address the care and needs of the animals and staff.”

While the shelter has adopted out hundreds of animals since reopening in January, hundreds more have entered the facility. The facility was closed for part of the year after a Strep Zoo outbreak.

The shelter hopes to get another 100 dogs out of the facility within the next week.

The ASFAC is open to the public Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. To view the many animals available for adoption, visit princegeorgespets4us.com
