The Vital Role of Pet Food

Pet food isn’t just about feeding pets — it’s about sustainability, innovation, and creating careers that merge science with compassion.

When I joined Simmons Foods eight years ago, my background was entirely in R&D for human food. It didn’t take long to realize that pet food plays a vital role in sustainability by using nutritious animal parts that people rarely consume. That realization opened my eyes to an industry that combines science, sustainability, and creativity.

Unlike humans, pets eat a consistent meal called a static diet, so every meal must be perfectly balanced — a unique challenge for food scientists. As humans, we only experience this once in our lives, as babies. This complexity challenged me to think differently about food science and sparked a passion for innovation.

The industry is rapidly evolving with new ingredient technologies and a trend toward human-grade pet foods, which require even higher standards for nutrition, palatability, and transparency. For example, novel proteins and functional ingredients are shaping the future of pet nutrition, driving advancements that benefit both pets and the planet.

This process requires skills of Food, Animal, and Meat Scientists who understand the functionality of food while balancing it with palatability, the qualities that make food appealing to pets. During the campus visits I mentioned in an earlier blog, I noticed that many students have pets and are very interested in how we develop food for them. Many them are pre-vet, but not all of them will be accepted into vet school. For those passionate about science and pets, the pet food industry offers a meaningful alternative — a chance to turn their interests into a rewarding career. Opportunities range from formulation and quality assurance to sustainability leadership, making this field as diverse as it is impactful.

Ultimately, the pet food industry is essential for sustainability and affordability in the meat sector. It reduces waste, supports environmental goals, and creates innovative solutions for feeding pets responsibly. For me, it has been an incredible journey — a way to grow my innovation skills in a fun and rewarding way. As the industry continues to evolve, it offers endless opportunities for those ready to make a difference at the intersection of science, sustainability, and care for animals.
