Is your dog’s bed smarter than yours?

The nation couldn’t sleep easy if our pets weren’t comfortable, and doting dog owners are opening up their homes and wallets to the new breed of posh pet beds.
Supplier to the Savoy and the superyacht set, Savoir makes bespoke canine daybeds with room for two. The Barbour dog bed has famous fashion fans, including David Gandy. Scotts of London specialises in custom leather Chesterfields for the mutts of soap stars. The question is: how much are you willing to pay?

Some humans work their pets into the interior decor. “It’s increasingly normal for the family pets to be treated as stakeholders in a renovation,” the interior designer Emma Sims-Hilditch says. “They really do prioritise the dog when they’re designing the house, especially if they haven’t got children. We are doing dressing rooms for dogs, dog showers and grooming stations in boot rooms, and incorporating beds into the kitchen cabinetry.” An under-the-counter bed is a regular request at the kitchen firms Neptune and Tom Howley, whose sleeping nooks allow hounds a safe space from which they can keep an eye out for falling food.

Spoiling our dogs with custom sleeping quarters is not just a British foible. Martyn Lawrence Bullard, a British decorator based in Los Angeles, has a Hollywood clientele including Cher and RuPaul. He says: “The life of the pet in Los Angeles is quite a privileged one. We have had bespoke mattresses made for the dogs by some of the best mattress makers in the world. Electric blackout shades on timers control their circadian rhythms and piped music settles or stimulates the pups.”

With minor mental gymnastics, investment in Rover’s repose seems like a bargain. Savoir’s State No 1 bed is more than £150,000; its custom pet beds start at £1,500 — a hundredth of the cost and surely a small price to pay to buy your furry friend a one percenter’s lifestyle.

With their unparalleled noses for scenting out what will part us from our money, the fashion houses, from Gucci to Hermès, Versace and Fendi have all launched posh pet beds. Barbour’s waxed cotton bed, with that familiar tartan lining, is favoured by Dora, the rescue Yorkie cross of model and loungewear entrepreneur David Gandy (£94.95, barbour.com). Too butch for your pooch? Dolce & Gabbana supplies a mini-me mutt-couch to match its Planetario Giove Loveseat (£2,570, dolcegabbana.com).

Designers’ dogs have inspired some of the most stylish pet beds. The tablescaping queen and US Vogue contributor Alice Naylor-Leyland created a scallop-topped rattan basket for her cavapoo, Ethel, (£298, mrsalice.com).
A bed for Patch the Patterdale terrier was the first product launched by the fabric designer Louisa Tratalos (from £150, coloursofarley.com). She says: “I rescued Patch in lockdown and was looking for a specific stripe to make his bed. When I discovered how difficult it was to find the perfect stripe, that’s when I set up Colours of Arley.”

If dogs were entrusted with an unlimited budget, which bed would they buy? Our vox pup reveals that they would trouser the cash to spend on a subscription to Lily’s Kitchen and co-sleep with their humans … which brings us to bed stairs.
Tratalos introduced a set of stairs at home this summer. “For Patch’s tenth birthday, when he found it was hard to climb on to the furniture, I made him upholstered steps (£495, coloursofarley.com). His stripe was inspired by the brown of squirrels’ fur and the piping, in green, was a reference to tennis balls, his two favourite things to chase.”
Whatever you spend on dedicated dog furniture, in your pet’s opinion, your bed will likely remain the smartest place to sleep.
