Labradoodle Who ‘Chooses Her Own Accessories’ Each Day Has Better Fashion Sense Than Humans
For so many reasons, I wish that my dog could communicate with human language. There are so many questions I want to ask her, from what her life was like before I adopted her to what she really thinks about the members of our family. And then, there’s the smaller stuff, too. Which dog food flavor does she like best, and would she prefer if I only bought that flavor from now on? If she could choose, which leash does she want to use on our walk?
Our dogs may never be able to speak the way humans do, but they actually can make their own choices to a certain extent. At least, the very stylish Labradoodle in the video below is making her own choices, and she is a star.
Dog mom @lindsey.winn shared this peek at her pup Winnie’s decision making process in a TikTok video on Thursday, February 13. While Winnie was getting ready for the day, she got to choose which bandana she wanted to accessorize with.
Her mom laid all the bandanas out on the floor so Winnie could see all of her options, and then she picked one. Despite having tons of colorful options, she went for the beige right away.
What can we say? She’s a classy and elegant gal who knows that neutrals never go out of style.
Teaching Dogs to Pick an Option
If you’re dying to know which bandana — or which anything — your dog would choose after seeing Winnie pick out her accessory, you’re not alone. Being able to choose between multiple options is a pretty cool trick to have up your (or your dog’s) sleeve either way.
The good news? It’s also a pretty easy trick for a dog to learn if they’re fans of tricks. Whole Dog Journal calls this teaching a “you choose” cue. Basically, you’ll choose two different treats — one high value and one lower value, like a piece of meat and a piece of kibble — and give each one a name, allowing them to snack on that type of treat until those names have been assigned.
Then, you’ll want to put each treat on the floor in separate bowls, saying their names as you do, without letting your dog go for the treat. Then, you’ll say, “you choose!” and pick up the bowl containing the treat they didn’t choose.
With enough repetition, your dog will eventually learn they’re allowed to choose which treat they want, and you’ll be able to use this little trick with different items, not just treats (like bandanas, perhaps?).
Get ready to hear all of your dog’s opinions, though… but I bet that’s already happening!
